Convert video to text online โ upload a video and get a searchable, editable transcript in minutes. Free transcription, no account, no signup.
Video content is invisible to search engines and impossible to skim. A transcript changes that โ the same content becomes something you can search, quote, repurpose and share as text. FreeToTranscribe extracts the audio from your video and converts it to text, so you get the words without having to watch the whole thing back or type a single character.
Content creators turn YouTube videos into blog posts and social media threads โ one video becomes five or six pieces of written content. Educators convert recorded lectures into study notes students can search and highlight. Businesses transcribe meeting recordings to pull out action items without re-watching a 90-minute call. Developers and designers transcribe user research sessions to find patterns across interviews. Whatever the source, the outcome is the same: your video becomes text you can actually use.
Every video file contains two separate streams โ the visual track and the audio track. Your video's resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate and file size have no effect on transcript quality. What matters is the audio. FreeToTranscribe extracts that audio and runs it through an AI speech recognition model trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual speech. The result is a transcript that reflects what was said, not what was on screen. A 500MB MP4 and a 5MB MP3 of the same recording produce identical transcripts โ because the video stream plays no part.
Download as TXT to paste into a document, blog editor, AI tool or notes app. Download as SRT or VTT to upload directly to YouTube, Vimeo, or a video editor as subtitle files โ SRT is more widely supported, VTT is the standard for browser-based players. Download as RTF to open in Word, Pages or Google Docs with paragraph formatting already applied.
Need subtitle files rather than a transcript? Go straight to our Create Subtitles tool โ it outputs SRT and VTT with timestamps aligned to the speech.
Accuracy depends on the audio quality, not the video. A presenter speaking to camera in a quiet room transcribes very accurately. A lecture recorded from the back of an auditorium, or a panel with overlapping voices, will be less so. If your video has background music under the speech, accuracy drops โ the model hears the music as noise. Use the original recording rather than a screen-captured or re-compressed copy, and if you have an external microphone recording from the same session, use that file instead of the video.
Convert MP4 to text, MOV to text, WebM to text, AVI or MKV โ upload any common video format up to 25MB. We support 15+ languages and detect the language automatically โ no need to select before uploading. Files are processed securely and deleted immediately after you download your transcript.
You can also convert a YouTube video to text: download your video file, upload it here, and get a full transcript you can repurpose into show notes, captions or a blog post. The same works for screen recordings, Zoom and Teams meeting recordings, and any other video where you need the speech turned into accurate written text.
